@Joniversity rarely, besides the crusades (who may have been large, but europe has seen worse), religion was hardly eer a motivator in western history for conducting war and most soldiers were motivated by the fact that fighting pays better then working at some farm. In fact, i would argue that the biggest massacres of history, all of which were fought in the 20th century were not about religion at all. WW2 was about eugenics, which was thought to be science, should we condemn science now?
@Thescarydutchman A) I wouldn’t say rarely. sure money was part of it – more the looting part than the pay mostly, but still having god on your side, having a man of god saying “he told me” + repaying you in redemption + getting 72 virgins, etc. can be considered a motivation.
B) Believe me if there were bombs, rockets and plains in antiquity you would have seen way more casualties – the comparison isn’t fair.
@Thescarydutchman C) Killing in the name of science should be condemned – but its far harder to find an excuse with-in science to justify killing than it is with religions, as most of them have killing built into their most basic stories.
