The Mayan “long count” calendar (which ends 12/21/2012 AD) is 5,125 years long. That means the Mayan “long count” calendar began on August 11, 3114 BC, which is 40 years after the death of Adam (yes, THAT Adam!) and the same year that Stonehenge was initially constructed.
Archeologists tell us that the original Stonehenge was a circle 360′ in diameter, consisting of an earthen berm that was pierced by 56 deep postholes arranged in a circle with one opening (tall poles were probably placed in these holes). The opening is aligned precisely with the rising sun at dawn on the Summer Solstice, June 21 of each year. This tells the observer that – in exactly six months – the Winter Solstice will be here – December 21.
In later generations Stonehenge became a religious gathering place and generations after that, a peaceful cemetery.
The speculation is that Stonehenge was built to give warning that something was coming (again) from the sky, and would be seen first from that direction; or, conversely, “we have exactly six months to December 21 when stuff may happen”. Nobody knows, really.
