How can a calendar just end? Aren’t they counting just like we are? Maybe I would better understand why some people say this is the end of time, I understood how their calendar differs from ours. If you understand the Mayans, please enlighten me.
I was just wondering, because, if the Mayans have proved right times before, then it might be less likely for an apocalypse on December 21, 2012.
I hear all these stories what exactly does 2012 resemble?
Is it really the end of the world?

They have made predictions that have come true.
I mean what does all this mean?

I don’t believe in this, but I think a lot of people do. I’ve even heard of far more fantastical stories people believe in 
So I thought I would ask. If the Mayans predicted the end wouldn’t they have predicted the beginning with their calendar? So did the Mayan calendar start at the beginning of the world as we know it?

ok now, i see that the mayans and scientists say that nibiru is gonna hit earth in dec.21 2012 or an asteroid is gonna hit the ice caps but how can they be so sure that their gonna hit earth and not our moon, or some other planet, or if an asteroid does hit earth, how are they so sure that its gonna hit the ice caps?
I mean, it only ends in 2012, its not like it states that the world will end in 2012. Where are people getting the idea that the mayans actually stated that 2012 would be the end of the world? because they DIDN’T!!!

I have heard quite a lot about this lately, and as a christian, I think it is ridiculous. Doesn’t the bible clearly state in Mark 13 that noone will no the hour of the second coming? Not even the angels or the Son himself? If Jesus doesnt know, then why on earth would the mayans know? I ask this because I have heard some christians talk about 2012.

Ok, i’ve done a lot of research on this fact, some say that it will be the end some say this:
This is what’s happening on 12-21-2012: The Mayan Long Count calendar is rolling over from 12 Baktuns to 13 Baktuns (similar to our calendar going from 1999 to 2000 except a Baktun is 400 years long). Also on that morning, which is the winter solstice, there will be an astronomical alignment between the sun and the dark spot on the Milky Way at dawn.
The Maya believed that the dark area of the Milky Way was the birth canal of the universe, so when the sun came up through that dark area, it was being reborn (so you had that part of it correct). But our old world wasn’t going to die at that moment. It’s already dead and has been for years.

The Mayans still do exist, they live in mexico and very few exist now, but they still live.

Why do people care so much that the Mayan calendar ends in the year 20012. The Mayans are supposed to be psychic or something? Maybe they just ran out of room on the rock and thats why it ends.
I know that both the tzolkin and haab work together and it takes 52 years for it to complete a cycle. and that it didn’t originate with the mayans but with the olmecs?

That’s right the year 4772 which is 2762 years away. If this date was predicted to be a day that would occur, why does everyone say that the world will end in 2012? It’s still gonna be here according to the Mayans!

I understand it ends on december 21, 2012. My question is, why do people assume that it means the world will cease to exist on this date.
Isn’t it possible the Mayans ran out of room to keep their circular calender going. They had to stop somewhere, right? Please don’t answer unless you can give me a link to a site that thoroughly explains why the Mayans are so interesting and what theories there are to explain how advance they were for the kind and age.

As wkevinc pointed out, this Mayan calendar supposedly predicted the alignment of the sun, moon, earth, and center of the Milky Way. The Mayans didn’t have a clue about the center of the Milky Way. Sure, they could see the soft band of light across the sky, but they didn’t have the foggiest notion what it was. So where did this galactic reference come from? Certainly not the Mayans.
I’ve looked up the data. The sun passes close to the galactic center on that date, but it follows that same track every year. The earth, sun, and galactic center are never in good alignment. Also, the moon is nowhere near in alignment with the sun or the galactic center (w/re to the earth) on that date.
Yes, I knew this was all bunk, but I was curious where this notion about the galactic center came from.
Stephanie, we *are* in the Milky Way galaxy. Better check your source. The Sagittarius arm is the nearest major spiral arm to our solar system. We are in the Orion arm, which is a smaller offshoot of it.
Answer Dude, no civilization before the 19th century had even the slightest notion of galaxies. The Mayans did not know that the Milky Way was an aggregate of stars revolving around a center. They simply did not have the technology for making such a determination.
did it ever occur to you that the Mayans wanted to stop writing the calendar because they were at one time and 2012 was so far away? If they got close to it, they would of started up again. Or they got raided and slaughtered, never to return again.
I’ve read some articles and they say when the Mayan Calendar ends, the world ends? I don’t think it’s true that the worlds going to end. The Mayans Predicted stuff and they were true. But what if they were false ’cause there are no proof that the world will end. The Mayan Calendar will end but all calendars end. But why was it created?
I have known about this phenomena for a couple of years now, but I thought I’d put my own bit of knowledge out there. I’ve heard a lot lately about how the Mayans, using their calendar, are predicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012.
However, why would someone rely on the predictions of a civilization that could not even forecast its own demise? Really? Seems kind of like trusting a bankrupt stockbroker with your money. Thoughts?
I’ll be honest, I don’t really understand much about the Mayan Calendar. How does it end if it’s a circle that keeps moving? I thought a circle was endless, but that’s just me. So what does it mean when it ends? That a new "cycle" is starting or something? I don’t believe the world is ending, but I’m interested in what the Mayans believed, and I guess still do today. Could someone please explain this? Thanks.
