It needs to be funny, suspenseful, emotional, make you laugh, make you cry, have good acting, and everything else that makes Armageddon a great movie.

Deep Impact and Dante’s Peak are my favorite disaster films. Deep Impact involves a meteor, and Dante’s Peak involves a volcano.
Speaking of volcanos, if you can suspend the disbelief of the eruption of one under L.A., the film Volcano is a lot of fun.
The Day After Tomorrow got a bad rap from some, but I enjoyed it. The Core is somewhat slow-moving, but also has the right elements.
If you don’t mind the good v. evil angle, you might check out the mini-series of (Stephen King’s) The Stand. For other end-of-the-world nuclear disasters, I didn’t like The Day After at all, but I really enjoyed Testament. Just bear in mind that Testament is VERY bleak. An older film in this genre is Panic in the Year Zero, which I rather liked.
And of course, end of the world by aliens: Independence Day.
